| Our post last week discussed what topics are covered in this "classroom" portion of the process. At the conclusion of this initial session, all new members are provided with their new member packets and the contents of this packet are reviewed.
This week's post will cover what is included in the packet. The packet contains information on the operational and administrative officers of the fire company (names, ranks, etc. so new members can get to know who people are and what their roles are), an informational document containing FAQs for new members and new member practical skill sheets. The FAQ document aims to assist new members with topics such, "how do I get turnout gear?" "How do I sign up for training classes?" "Who do I see to complete insurance paperwork?" Basically, we try to put ourselves in the shoes of someone new to the organization and point them in the right direction so they get off on the right foot.
The new member practical skills sheets are designed to get new members functioning on a basic level as soon as possible. We have "Core Skills" and "Non-Core Skills." Core skills must be completed within three months of membership. Non-Core skills must be completed within your first year of membership , which we call your "provisional period." Our next post will go into the new members skills in more detail. |
