Standpipe Training at the Promenade and Training in Whitemarsh
July 9, 2024
On Monday night, several members of the company took Tower 88 to an acquired structure in Whitemarsh for training offered by Barren Hill Volunteer Fire Company. Additional members stayed back and worked on standpipe operations at the Promenade on Welsh Road. This complex is unique, as it has a 6 floor parking garage that is in the middle of an apartment building where only the top floor is visible from the exterior.
This drill was focused on our new members and they made up E88 and E88-1's crews. They established a water supply from a hydrant and connected to the dry standpipe connection at the base of the parking garage. Next, they carried all of the hoses and equipment needed up to the 6th floor in full gear. We took advantage of the heat and humidity to simulate the strength and stamina needed to operate at a mid rise building in the summer. Once they reached the top floor, the standpipe was flushed, a pressure gauge and elbow were connected to the standpipe outlet and 200ft of 2.25" hose were deployed. All members had a chance to fill the nozzle and backup positions while flowing the line.
