Carbon Monoxide continued:

A few of the common causes of CO in the home are: blocked chimney’s, warming vehicles up in attached garages & improper combustion in any fuel burning appliances.

In the past few years you may be wondering why Carbon Monoxide emergencies have been in the news more than ever.  Due to the advancements in housing construction, the home’s of today are far more energy efficient than in past years.  Although this is great for heating & air conditioning costs, it also limits the amount of fresh air coming into the home.  With a far more air tight home, CO can build up much faster & at higher levels then ever before.

One way you can help alert & protect your family from CO is do install Carbon Monoxide detectors in your home.  Make sure to place detectors at least 15 feet away from any fuel burning appliances.  If you are going to only have one detector in your home, have it close to your sleeping areas.  If multiple detectors are going to be installed have one on each level & if possible in every bedroom.

A yearly inspection of all fuel burning appliances, chimneys & flues can help prevent CO from invading your home.
