Fort Washington Fire Company Fire Safety and Prevention
Local Fire Prevention Week Activities
Fire
Prevention Week is celebrated nationally each year during the week (Sunday –
Saturday) that October 9 falls in. October
9, 1871 is the date of the Great Chicago Fire, and in 1920 President Wilson
declared by proclamation that this date is to be observed for fire prevention
and fire safety annually.
The
Fort Washington Fire Company conducts and participates in many programs
beginning the week prior to Fire Prevention Week, and through a week or two
past. The reason that we start the week prior to Fire Prevention
Week is because we do have a very busy schedule, and we try to spread the
activities out over time. As we are
a 100% volunteer fire company, we have to rely on the availability of our
members. Some of the members do use
some of their vacation days from their paid places of employment to participate
in the fire prevention activities.
Throughout
the evening hours (6:30 PM – 9:00 PM) on the Monday prior to Fire Prevention
Week, the Fort Washington Fire Company presents our annual Fire Prevention Expo
at the Fort Washington Expo Center. Click
here for more information about our Expo.
During
Fire Prevention Week, we attend the public and parochial schools in Upper Dublin
Township. Coloring and poster
contests are conducted in conjunction with our school visits and fire Expo. Click here for more information about our school
visits
Members
of the Fort Washington Fire Company Fire Prevention Committee are invited every
year to assist other fire companies with their programs, which include Expos,
open houses, musters, and the like. Usually,
our personnel take our robot and / or “Hazard House”, along with literature
for handout. Some of the fire
companies that we have gone to assist are Centre Square Fire Company (Whitpain
Township), Cheltenham Fire Company (Cheltenham Township), Roslyn Fire Company
(Abington Township), Doylestown Fire Company (Doylestown Township and Doylestown
Borough, Bucks County), and Plumsteadville Fire Company, (Plumstead Township,
Bucks County).
